Transitioning from a career in logistics to running a mobile coffee and soft-serve ice cream business may seem like an unusual pivot, but for me, it’s a dream come true. After decades of navigating the complexities of supply chains and ensuring goods arrived on time, I’m now on a new path: delivering joy in the form of coffee and soft-serve treats. Here’s a glimpse into what it takes to launch a brand-new venture.
The Idea
It all started with a love for great coffee and the nostalgia of soft-serve ice cream. Combining these two passions, I envisioned "Bee & Bean," a mobile coffee and soft-serve ice cream business with a vintage bee-themed Piaggio Ape vehicle. The goal is to create a unique experience at fairs, festivals, and weddings, serving up smiles one cup or cone at a time.
Laying the Foundation
Starting a new business from scratch is no small feat. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:
Research Is KeyMoving from logistics to the food and beverage industry required extensive research. From health regulations to equipment needs, every detail had to be understood. I’ve spent countless hours learning about coffee beans, soft-serve machines, and the art of crafting the perfect menu.
Planning and BudgetingMy career in logistics taught me the value of planning. I’ve invested $65,000 in the Piaggio Ape vehicle and equipment, carefully allocating funds to ensure the business is set up for success. Budgeting also includes rent for event spaces, ingredient costs, and marketing expenses.
Branding and IdentityCreating a brand that stands out is crucial. "Bee & Bean" is more than a name—it’s a theme that runs through every aspect of the business, from the vehicle’s design to the menu. The bee theme symbolizes community and sweetness, which is exactly what I want to bring to my customers.
Navigating ChallengesTransitioning careers isn’t without its hurdles. There are moments of self-doubt and a steep learning curve. Yet, the skills I developed in logistics—problem-solving, organization, and adaptability—have been invaluable.
Looking Ahead
As "Bee & Bean" prepares to launch, the excitement is palpable. I’m eager to attend my first events and see customers enjoy what we’ve created. Success isn’t just about profits; it’s about creating connections, bringing people together, and sharing a little sweetness in their day.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
To anyone considering a career change or starting their own business, my advice is simple:
Start Small: Test your concept before diving in fully.
Lean on Your Strengths: Use the skills you’ve honed in your previous career.
Stay Passionate: It’s your passion that will keep you motivated through challenges.
This journey from logistics to lattes is just beginning, and I can’t wait to see where it leads. Whether it’s the buzz of the espresso machine or the smiles sparked by a soft-serve cone, I’m ready to serve up something special.
